Application of Gas Detectors in the Automotive Manufacturing Industry

2025-11-27

With the increasing number of vehicles on the road, the demands for production and processing, painting and maintenance have been growing steadily. Automotive manufacturing, engine production and testing, and special processes all involve flammable, explosive, toxic and harmful gases. In production and manufacturing, gases such as ammonia, flammable gases, carbon monoxide (CO), and oxygen are commonly involved in test rooms and special processes. During stamping, painting, drying and other processes, flammable and toxic gases like volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hydrogen are often generated. Considering the comprehensive requirements of safe production, it is essential to use gas detectors to monitor these generated gases.

In the design and production process of automotive painting lines, the main function of the drying oven system is to bake the painted vehicle bodies at high temperatures. This enables the wet paint film attached to the body surface to undergo cross-linking and curing under high-temperature conditions, forming a high-performance paint film. The exhaust gas produced by the heat source of the drying oven is often accompanied by carbon monoxide, which poses a potential leakage hazard. Meanwhile, during vehicle and engine testing, the emitted exhaust gas may also cause carbon monoxide poisoning among on-site personnel, resulting in personal injury.
Environments such as engine test areas, trenches, paint booths, drying ovens, and storage tanks for natural gas or gasoline products are usually relatively confined spaces. When other gases displace oxygen in the air within these spaces, it is prone to cause hypoxia and poisoning risks for workers.

Key Applications of Gas Detectors in the Automotive Industry
1.Prevent explosions caused by flammable gases from engine fuel leakage through gas detector monitoring.
2.Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning from engine combustion exhaust gas via gas detector-based CO detection.
3.Prevent hypoxia hazards during operations in confined spaces such as manholes by monitoring oxygen concentration with gas detectors.
4.Mitigate explosion and poisoning risks from fuel (LNG) leakage and CO generation around heating furnaces—prevent poisoning by detecting CO and avoid explosions by monitoring flammable gases.
Therefore, in various process scenarios of automobile manufacturing plants, it is recommended to equip corresponding gas detection instruments to ensure operational safety at every link.

1. Portable Gas Detectors
Portable gas detectors are suitable for use in restricted spaces of automobiles, including engine test areas, trenches, paint booths, drying ovens, and storage tanks for natural gas or gasoline products. Additionally, on-site workers can carry them around to achieve real-time monitoring of oxygen, flammable gases, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide.

2. Fixed Gas Detectors
Fixed gas detectors can be installed on automotive production lines or in testing laboratories to monitor flammable gases, carbon monoxide, and other gases. For instance, when an engine operates in a small room for performance and efficiency testing, these detectors can simultaneously monitor fuel leakage and the formation of toxic gases.
